Ben will be roasted by his brothers Bernard Ysursa ’61 (St. Teresa’s Academy) and Jess Asla ’80, and friend David Skinner ’71.

The first Loaves and Fishes event was held in 2006 and featured the candidates for Idaho Governor and Lt. Governor (all four Catholic) and was the brain child of Andy Brunelle ’78, and John Brunelle ’79 patterning after the long-standing Alfred E. Smith Memorial Dinner started in 1945 by the Archdiocese of New York in honor of New York Governor and 1928 Democratic Presidential candidate Alfred Smith.

BK alums, men and women, are encouraged to form their own teams or just show up solo and join a squad for the event, which is a fun-raiser conducted by the Bishop Kelly Alumni Association.

Established in 1988, the Alumknights 3-on-3 tourney attracts dozens of players back to the BK campus every year on the Saturday following Christmas (unless Chrismas is on a Saturday, then the 3 on 3 is on Sunday).

In their announcement, Humanities [...]]]> Jan Zauha ’76 of Bozeman, Montana has been honored by Humanities Montana in a ceremony held on September 7.  Humanities Montana is Montana’s independent, nonprofit affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), founded in 1972.

In their announcement, Humanities Montana says, “Humanities Heroes—people who have contributed significantly to the humanities by presenting engaging programs, hosting many humanities events, composing important books and articles about humanities topics, donating funds to sustain humanities work, and more—have been nominated by the community.”

Part of the honor for Jan says, “Her enthusiasm, humor, and empathy make her respected and admired since she strives to be down-to-earth and approachable. Jan is a great representative of a humanities scholar who connects with people while reflecting on issues that concern us all.”

The Knights of the Gridiron would like to invite all former Bishop Kelly Football players, Coaches, and Players’ Parents to attend the first ever Knights of the Gridiron Football Reunion. Saturday, September 1st Season Opener vs. Skyview 10:00 AM – Reunion Tailgate Breakfast Come to Bishop Kelly before the game to reunite with teammates and friends. Check out the new remodel, have some breakfast and relive your best moments on the field for the Knights. Noon – Kickoff Reunion attendees will have group seating, and will be honored on the field at halftime. Postgame – Reunion Social at the Crescent Alumknights who are 21 or older are invited to continue the party down the road at the Crescent Bar and Grlll – 5500 W. Franklin Road, Boise.

Gregory joined the Idaho Air National Guard and made it his career. He held various jobs and [...]]]>

Raised in Boise, Idaho, Gregory received his education at St. Joseph’s Grade School, Bishop Kelly High School and the University of Idaho, “GO VANDALS.” Gregory joined the Idaho Air National Guard and made it his career. He held various jobs and dealt with many fine people while in the Air Guard. His last Tour of Duty was Vehicle Maintenance and Operations Superintendent. He always bragged on his crew, they were top notch characters. He retired on December 31, 2002 with the rank of Chief Master Sergeant. Gregory always said that he never had a bad day at the Guards. Gregory had the privilege of having two “true” loves in his life, Darla L. Nordstrom, his wife and Patricia M. Halliday, mother of his children. These wonderful people prolonged his life and saved him numerous times. Love, Love, Love Ya – Nordy and Bubs. Gregory is survived by his children, Annie (Rick) Howland, Phil (Jill) Goodson and Janie Goodson, his grandchildren, Drew and Robert Howland and Lola and Henry Goodson, his step daughters, Nichole (Paul) Santarone and Danielle (Joel) Clark, his brother Rick (Jackie) Goodson and numerous nephews and nieces and their families. Gregory was preceded in death by his mother, Alice (Echevarria) Goodson, his Aunt and Uncle, Lola and Tony Uranga and his father, Fred Goodson. Life is good, enjoy it. Drew is Gregory’s 10 year old grandson who is recovering from a jaw tumor. The family would like to expressly thank the doctors, and medical staff at the VA Hospital and Community Living Center for the excellent care and support they provided Gregory. Graveside services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 23 at the Idaho State Veterans Cemetery with a gathering at the Basque Center to follow.

One person who we doubt will make it is Nick Symmonds from the Class of 2002 who is in London for the Summer Olympics, and will be running in the men’s 800 meter final on Thursday August 9th.

The Loaves and Fishes dinner is a fundraising event for Catholic Charities of Idaho.  Established in 2006 the first [...]]]> Boise Mayor David Bieter ’78 will be the guest of honor at the annual Loaves and Fishes dinner on Saturday February 4th.

The Loaves and Fishes dinner is a fundraising event for Catholic Charities of Idaho.  Established in 2006 the first Loaves and Fishes event featured the candidates for Idaho Governor and Lieutenant Governor.  For the first time in state history the four candidates for the two major parties are Roman Catholic .  Recognizing this anomaly, Andy Brunelle ’78 dreamed up the idea of a fundraising dinner similar to the Al Smith Memorial Dinner.  The Al Smith dinner is held annually in New York City raising funds for health care services of the Archdiocese.  Thus, Catholic Charities of Idaho was a logical beneficiary of an Idaho version of an event that promotes humor and good will among those in public life.  Brunelle got together with his broth John Brunelle ’79, Marc Johnson (former board member of the Bishop Kelly Foundation) and Rev. Thomas Faucher to draw up plans for the first event.

In recent years the Loaves and Fishes Dinner has honored public officials such as Idaho Rep. Mike Simpson and Idaho Governor C.L. “Butch” Otter (STA ’62).  Now in 2012 Boise Mayor gets his turn.
